Joni Mitchell To Be Played By Paula Cole In New Play

According to Jazz News, Joni Mitchell is the subject of a new play written and performed by students of the Berklee College of Music in Boston, and the title role will be played by who will be joined by singer/songwriter Paula Cole. The show will be streamed live at Concert Window.

Back to the Garden: The Artistry of Joni Mitchell will feature music and dance written and performed by Berklee’s Advanced Music Theater Workshop students, in collaboration with the school’s Joni Mitchell Ensemble. The show traces the evolution of Joni Mitchell’s music from folk to pop, jazz and world music.

“As with many serious writers, my life’s work has a very high bar set by the uncompromising, inestimable Joni Mitchell, ” said Cole. “Joni is among the very greatest contributors to modern music.”

Paula Cole, who is a 1990 graduate of Berklee, will perform “A Case of You” (first released on Joni’s landmark album Blue, 1971) and “Love” (Wild Things Run Fast, 1982). “Big Yellow Taxi,” “Circle Game,” “Both Sides Now,” “Goodbye Pork Pie Hat” and more will also appear with new arrangements by Berklee students and faculty.

Back to the Garden is being directed by Rebecca Perricone, with music direction by Grammy winner Terri Lyne Carrington (The Mosaic Project) and Berklee student Ben Lusher. It will be performed Thursday, May 3, at 7:30 pm at the Berklee Performance Center.

CORRECTION: An earlier version stated that Paula Cole would be performing the part of Joni Mitchell throughout the entire show, but this is incorrect. She is performing two songs.
