James Taylor In the Studio reflects on career breakthrough

A great new radio interview with James Taylor has been posted online. Here’s Part 1, Part 2, Part 3. He goes through most of the tracks of his original Greatest Hits album, particularly focusing on the making of Sweet Baby James, Mud Slide Slim and the Blue Horizon and Gorilla. James is in good spirits and host Redbeard connects well with him. The program ends with a special acoustic performance of “Carolina in My Mind”.

North American syndicated rock radio show InTheStudio: The Stories Behind History’s Greatest Rock Albums gets it all from guest James Taylor with stories behind his early work this week on InTheStudio.NET as part of the MEDIUM RARE online-only series. Born in Boston and raised in North Carolina, James Taylor’s career broke through in 1970 with the release of Sweet Baby James and, within a very short period of time, he’d be a Grammy winner, a Time magazine cover story, and married to an equally successful singer, Carly Simon. Taylor talks candidly with show host Redbeard about his early influences and his lifelong musical partnership with Carole King, including how Taylor ended up recording King’s “You’ve Got A Friend”, his first # 1.

“Carole and I were sharing a bill… at a place called Doug Weston’s Troubadour on Santa Monica (Blvd. Los Angeles). That’s the first time I heard this song…. I said, ‘Boy Carole that’s a great song’ … This was definitely one of the sweetest pieces she had. Without even thinking twice about it, she just gave it on over and said, ‘You do it.’ I’d never heard of anyone being that generous.”
